What Is NotebookLM? The story of Steven Johnson’s source-grounded AI

SocialAdm September 22, 2026 0 Comments

You use AI to get answers. But what if you could give AI something to study instead?

That idea sits at the heart of NotebookLM, and behind it is Steven Johnson, the writer, thinker and Google Labs executive. Who has been part of the product’s journey since its earliest days.

Johnson is known for writing about innovation, ideas and the way people think. But inside Google, he became one of the key people shaping a very different kind of AI tool: one designed not to know everything, but to understand the information you give it.

The idea began inside Google Labs in 2022, when a small team started exploring an AI-powered notebook that could help people research, think and write using their own sources. The first prototype, then called Project Tailwind, was built in just six weeks by four to five people working part-time.

In July 2023, Project Tailwind became NotebookLM, an experimental Google Labs product built around a simple idea: instead of asking AI to answer from everything it knows, give it your documents and let it help you make sense of them.

And that simple idea is exactly what makes NotebookLM so useful, especially when you’re a college student drowning in PDFs, lecture notes, presentations and readings before an exam.

From Project Tailwind to NotebookLM

The story of NotebookLM began with a problem that sounds surprisingly familiar: how do you make sense of a huge amount of information without constantly jumping between different documents, tabs and sources?

In 2022, a small Google Labs team began experimenting with an AI-powered notebook that could work directly with a user’s own information. The early prototype was called Project Tailwind.

The idea was different from a traditional chatbot. Instead of starting with a blank chat box and asking an AI about anything, you could give the AI a collection of sources and ask it to help you understand them.

The prototype was built in just six weeks by a team of four to five people working part-time. In July 2023, Google introduced it publicly as NotebookLM, with the product centred around Google’s Gemini technology and the user’s own sources.

And this is where NotebookLM’s real strength begins.

It isn’t trying to be the AI that knows everything.

It is trying to be the AI that knows your material.

Why NotebookLM Is a Game-Changer for Students

This is where NotebookLM becomes genuinely useful, especially for college students.

Think about exam week: lecture PPTs, PDFs, readings, class notes and maybe a few previous-year papers all sitting in different folders. Instead of going through everything manually, you can bring your study material into one NotebookLM notebook and start working with it.

You can ask it to summarise chapters, explain difficult concepts, compare topics, create study guides and answer questions based on your uploaded sources. It can also provide citations, so you can go back and check where the information came from.

And it doesn’t stop at summarising.

You can turn your material into FAQs, revision notes, flashcards and practice questions, or ask NotebookLM to quiz you on a particular topic. That makes it useful not just for consuming information, but for actually testing whether you’ve understood it.

One of its most interesting features is Audio Overviews, which can turn your sources into an AI-generated discussion. So instead of staring at another PDF, you could listen to your revision material while commuting to college, travelling or taking a break.

For a student, the workflow can be as simple as:

  1. Upload your notes
  2. Understand the topic
  3. Ask questions
  4. Create revision material
  5. Test yourself.

And that’s what makes NotebookLM different from simply asking a chatbot to “explain this topic.” You’re giving it the exact material you’re expected to study and asking it to help you work through that material.

Of course, it shouldn’t replace actually studying or checking your prescribed material. AI can still make mistakes.

But used properly, NotebookLM can turn a mountain of college notes into something much more manageable.

What Makes NotebookLM Different?

The biggest difference is its source-grounded approach.

Most AI chatbots are designed to answer questions using information from their broader training and available tools. NotebookLM is built around a more focused idea: give it your sources first, then ask it to work with them.

That makes it particularly useful when accuracy and context matter. A student can upload a professor’s notes, prescribed readings and lecture slides, then ask questions specifically based on those materials.

It also means NotebookLM can help connect information across multiple sources. You could ask:

“Compare these two theories using only the readings I uploaded.”

Or:

“What are the key differences between these three concepts?”

Instead of spending hours searching through separate files, you get a starting point that brings the relevant information together.

For college students, that’s perhaps the most valuable part of NotebookLM: it doesn’t just give you information. It helps you work with the information you already need to study.

NotebookLM at a Glance

Key features: Audio Overviews, Mind Maps, study guides, citations, quizzes and source-based Q&A

Major advantage: Helps you understand and connect information from your own study material

Conclusion

From a small Google Labs experiment called Project Tailwind to a powerful AI research and study tool, NotebookLM has come a long way.

What makes it stand out is its simple approach: instead of trying to know everything, it helps you make sense of what you already have.

For college students, that could mean turning a pile of PDFs, lecture notes and readings into something you can actually understand, revise and learn from.

And perhaps that’s the real idea behind NotebookLM: AI doesn’t always need to give you more information. Sometimes, it just needs to help you make sense of the information you already have.
