A layman’s guide to Business Blogging
You certainly do not have to be a journalist to start a business blog. While writing proper English and the flow of the blog post matters a lot, however, both the parameters can certainly improve over a period of time! Practice makes a man perfect! In this blog post, I shall bring to light your demons preventing you from blogging for your business and present to you a Layman’s guide to Business blogging!
In an earlier blog post, i had talked about the Importance of Business Blogging .
What stops you from Business Blogging
Many a times company owners or Marketing heads or Brand Managers shy away from Business blogging yet complain that they dont get too much of Organic traffic.
In my experience, I have found the following reasons for not taking business blogging too seriously:
Blogging in my business domain is too frequent
Business owner named ABC
This one sounds a bit like an excuse but in my opinion this is one of the genuine reasons. This is one of the main reasons that holds back business blogging. The sheer volume of blogs in a certain domain intimidates other competitors. Thereby, a feeling of despondency sets over the brand custodian.
However, a reminder for every brand custodian is that you are not always executing business blogging for coming out on top on a set of keywords. Instead, business blogging is done with a long term view in sight. Moreover, there can be a set of long tail keywords where you can make a mark in Search Engine rankings. Isn’t it?
The quest for perfection!
Business owner name CDE
Some brand custodians think that either there should be perfect business blogs or none at all! Well, the content that goes out on website definitely matters but sometimes perfection comes in the way of taking the first step. Besides, blogging and content writing are subjective matters so, if you make logical points or back up your claims with research or facts, your job is done. On the other hand, if someone really dislikes your effort, they have the opportunity to mention that in the comment section!
Blogging is a time taking process
Brand Manager, A!B@C#
Sure! Everything in this world takes time! You might have put in a lot of time to build up your operations and getting the word out. Isn’t it? You might have validated your business model, attended networking events and taken a view from industry veterans before starting something on your own, isn’t it?
On the other side, if Web offers you to own a channel where you can talk about your business and/or product or service at length (say in 800 words), that would let you earn web traffic, why not jump to the opportunity? Better still, you can hire the specialists for the job. The content agency firm shall do the brainstorming, competitive analysis, and write plagiarism free content. As a brand custodian, you can do the proofreading part and post it on your website! A bit of SEO and a bit of distribution of the content can be done by the agency too in order to let you get a good rank!
If you are nodding your head right now, you would know the power of a business blog!
Blogging doesn’t lead to ROI
Brand Manager, X)Y*Z^
For everyone who holds that Blogging doesn’t lead to ROI, I just have this response:
- Define ROI
- Do you have a long term view or a myopic view?
Well, the answers to the above questions gives me a fair idea on what is going on in the brand custodian’s mind. Many custodians contend that they are obtaining work from Word of mouth so they dont need to reach out to unknown prospective set of customers. This sounds arrogant but also a way for the custodian to put their mind on something that really matters to them.
Well, i don’t contend their thinking. On the other hand, if I told you that you can negotiate better with a prospective client and also gauge the nerve of the industry and what sort of service is in demand?
Such an argument takes me back to my MBA days when job placement drives would be in full flow. The college’s placement committee would put in everything to get the entire batch placed. Thus, the students would prepare without moving out of college for the company coming on campus. While there would be some college mates would go out and approach companies with their CV, give interviews on their own and attain a different level of satisfaction on getting a job or at least learning from experience! In a similar vein, it is always good for a business to put in the effort in the form of Blogs and SEO to generate leads or traffic from unknown domain and crack such business deals! It gives a different high!
Parameters of Business Blogging
Business owners or brand custodians tend to underestimate the power of Business blogging. However, the game of getting a Google Rank is incomplete without blogging and SEO. So, if you look at Google SERP algorithm, there is an EAT Model that they follow. The full form of EAT is following:
Expertise
You need to be an expert in your field and show that you possess skill at what you do! Thus, if you are blogging regularly and executing the SEO process- on page and off page SEO. Google gathers that you are blogging and posting authentic stuff, thereby reward the website! This means that if you are Consultant or a doctor who has started his clinic or a educator who has started her online course or someone who can change the behavior of people, you need to remind your expertise to Google at regular intervals through non plagiarized content.
Authority
In the eyes of Google, you need to share your experiences on your blog platforms and indulge in conversations that happen over the comment section. Once you seem popular and people tend to talk to you over the blog content, you gain authority and a higher chance of ranking better on Google SERP. This means that writing a blog post is not enough, you need to market it well, make it visible, gather comments and post replies in order to gain authority!
Trustworthiness
Google contends that a website builds up Trustworthiness through enabling a secure payment transaction procedure to prevent fraudulent practices. Thus, if you are an eCommerce platform and your payment gateway doesn’t seem to be secure enough, Google will rate you down on the Trustworthiness quotient. Consequently, your rankings would take a beating!
Things to keep in mind for Business blogging
A guide to Business blogging is incomplete without keeping a few things in mind. Blogging is nothing but opening up another gateway that you would need to maintain and extract ROI from. So, these are somethings that you must keep in mind.
Blogging requires patience
Each high quality blog post will require at least 3 hours of writing. Furthermore, the ideal length of a blog post would be 1100+ words!
Opening of blog post matters!
Writing a blog post is similar to launching a big fat Bollywood movie at the box office. When someone hops on to your blog post, the reader’s first 120 seconds are crucial for him or her to decide if he/she should keep reading or not!
Content Distribution matters a lot!
In a universe with 1.5 billion websites, 500+ million active blogs and 100+ million bloggers, merely writing content is not enough!

You need to help the blog post to get it the desired reach and readership! Here, the content marketing agencies can help you gain a foothold through their clever marketing strategies.
However, since you might be utterly busy during working days, it is sometimes better to hire a content agency to maintain the frequency of blog posts and write content about trending topics. Thus, increasing the relevance of your blog posts while staying focussed on the company’s offerings.
