Google Keen v/s Pinterest
Google, despite being the internet behemoth has struggled to make its mark in the social media space. The company has already made several attempts to build a sustainable social media ecosystem with platforms like Google+ and Orkut but hasnβt had much success. However, being the tech giant, Google, yet another time, has come up with another experimental AI-powered social media platform named βKeenβ.
What is Google Keen?
Keen is like an automated variant of Pinterest that lets you curate content on subjects of your interest. You create a Keen (interest) via app/web, add a topic of interest or something you want to research, pick relevant recommendations, and the service will follow those topics to keep your pinboard of content ready. Keen is available through an android app or on a browser, with sign-in via a userβs Google account.
Here are some of the top features that make Keen stand out:
1) A home for long-term interests
On Keen, you say what you want to spend more time on and then brings content from the web and people you trust to help make that happen. You create a βkeen,β which can be on any topic, whether itβs making pasta at home or on cricket. Keen lets you explore the content you love, share your collection with others and discover new content based on your collection.
2) Curate and share
You can curate for yourself or for other people. Just as my girlfriend found resources to help me learn cooking, you can use Keen to create a collection of topics you know thoroughly and share it with people who would enjoy your curation. You can control what to share and whom to contribute to as keen lets you put your content either public or private.
3) Expand and explore
For every keen you create, the machine learning algorithm gets onto lookout for helpful content related to your interests. The more you save to a keen and organize it, the better the content becomes.
Even if youβre not a pro at a particular topic, you can still curate a keen and save a few interesting posts or links that you find interesting. These content act like a seed and help keen discover more related content over time as per your interest. Moreover, it also allows you to follow keens that others have created thousands of hand-curated lists from the community and get alerts when new things are added.
4) Collaborate
Once a Keen is created, Google let it’s users share and partner with friends, family members, who could also add more to the collection. This probably is the USP of Keen as it helps you connect with your peers, making it more addictive to use.
Pinterest v/s Google Keen
Back in early days of Pinterest when it was nothing more than a simplistic pinboard-style platform, allowing users to share their interest, Google probably didnβt care as it never seemed to be interested in what Pinterest had to offer. But over the years, as Pinterest has transacted into a visual discovery engine, and increasingly focused on eCommerce, Google has watched it at a slow pace, but surely, biting at the edges of its core search business. And while Pinterest is only taking up a fraction of that market Pinterest currently stands at 367 million MAU, while Google has 2 billion MAU for G Suite alone, it is growing, and it is, indeed, taking searches away from Google. This could be one of the reasons why Google has attempted to add Pinterest-like features and tools, keeping the social app at bay.
Similar to Pinterest, on Keen, you say what you want to spend more time on, and then curate content from the web and people you trust to help make that happen. You make a βkeen,β which can be about any subject. Keen lets you curate the content you adore, share your discoveries with others and find new content based on what you have saved.β
Sounds a lot like Pinterest, right?
Conclusion
Keen isnβt intended to be a place to spend endless hours browsing. Instead, itβs a home for your interests: a place to grow them, share them with loved ones and find things that will help in making this precious life count. It would be interesting to see how does the platform perform in the times to come. We are quite keen to use Keen. What about you?
